Happy birthday, Charlotte!
At just one year old today, Princess Charlotte has already become a fashion icon. Partly because she is the first female to benefit from the changes to the rules of succession, partly because she lives in the time where social media keeps the world constantly connected, all eyes are on the princess and what she’s wearing.
Over the past year, we’ve seen the following trends emerge in Kate’s sartorial choices for Charlotte, and we predict they will continue through year two:
Charlotte’s style is classic yet modern. Kate has mastered the art of creating a timeless look; photos of Charlotte look like they could have been taken any time in the last decade. We’ve seen Kate draw inspiration in choosing the children’s clothing from portraits of the more senior royals as little ones, yet she keeps Charlotte’s look relevant.
Charlotte has a “uniform”. Over the past year, we exclusively saw Charlotte in ivory and shades of pink until the release of yesterday’s birthday portraits, which showed the princess in a baby blue frock. These classic, feminine colors are amplified with ruffled collars, liberty prints, and hair bows. We fully anticipate seeing the floral dress, cardigan, tights, and matching hair bow combination throughout 2016.
Charlotte’s clothes aren’t expensive, but that doesn’t mean they are easily accessible. While we’ve seen the princess wear relatively inexpensive pieces and repeat her outfits, the focus on Spanish and English designers and craftsman can make obtaining the items she wore very difficult. Many brands Kate dresses Charlotte in have a small or new web presence, and acquiring international shipping can prove quite challenging.
Charlotte’s style inspires, and designers want her to wear their pieces. From Seraphine to Rachel Riley, many children’s wear designers have cited Charlotte as a source of creative inspiration over the past year – Marc Jacobs even created a Princess Charlotte lipstick shade! We’ve seen the Charlotte effect take place – just like with her brother and her mother, anything Charlotte wears is sure to sell out. Finally, we’ve seen several designers quick to make the claim that George or Charlotte wore one of their pieces – even if higher quality photos proved it wasn’t in the long run. They’re eager to see the princess in their designs…and we bet that temporary press boost didn’t hurt.
