The Royal Children Photographed With Her Majesty *UPDATED*

With Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday tomorrow, we had a sneaking suspicion that we’d be seeing an Annie Leibovitz photo of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren sometime this evening. We weren’t disappointed! Taken in the Green Room of Windsor Castle on Easter Monday, this image is certainly a treat! Queen Elizabeth is a stately figure in the center of the scene as her youngest (and arguably cutest!) family members gather around her. Beginning at the far left we see two of the Queen’s grandchildren: James, Viscount Severn and Lady Louise Windsor, the son and daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Next, and adorably holding her great-granny’s purse, is Mia Tindall, the daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall (Zara is the daughter of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips). You’ll easily recognize Prince George and Princess Charlotte sitting on Gan-Gan’s lap. Behind them stands Savannah Phillips, and to the far right is Isla Phillips. Savannah and Isla are daughters to Peter (Zara’s brother) and Autumn Phillips.

As we wait for hi-res images to aid in the ID process, we can make a couple of comments regarding George and Charlotte’s outfits. George wears a Fina Ejerique Baby Boy Wool Blend Knitted Cardigan. Regular readers of the blog will quickly recognize that this is the second time George has been photographed wearing the Spanish brand; the first was in the Cambridge Holiday Photo. The pieces are classic and affordable; in fact, if you’re quick, you can snatch up the cardigan on sale for £25. George completed his look with Amaia Kids Ribbed Knee Socks in Navy and Start Rite Jo shoes in Navy. While the image quality isn’t good enough to determine his shirt and shorts yet, we wouldn’t be surprised if the shorts are this pair of M&H Bermudas.* You’ll also notice that George looks considerably older in this image than the stamp image that was released yesterday. That’s because yesterday’s photograph was taken last June, while this one was taken 8 months later (March 2016).

Charlotte’s look is surprisingly similar to the dress and cardigan she wore in both her 6 month portraits and the family holiday portrait. As we saw yesterday, with George re-wearing his Rachel Riley ensemble publicly for the third time, Kate is very comfortable dressing her children in repeats. What makes Charlotte’s outfit especially interesting, however, is that it’s not exactly the same outfit as before, it just looks like it at first glance. The ruffled collar is patterned instead of solid white, and the sweater is made of a chunkier yarn than the previous cashmere iteration.* We think this is very intentional on Kate’s part. Our guess is that she’s repeating her children’s outfits and styling as a way of trying to minimize their publicity. Good luck with that, Kate!

Charlotte appears to be wearing a new pair of Amaia Ribbed Tights, this time in Dusty Pink. She also appears to be making her Early Day’s Pre-walker debut. While we won’t be able to say whether or not the model she wears is the Alex until a higher photo quality surfaces, we think it is likely. She could even be wearing an old pair of George’s (remember when he wore them on the Royal Tour Down Under?)* We will certainly be back in the next couple of days with more updates and for Charlotte’s birthday. Have a great week, Royal Watchers. We’ll see you very soon!
* UPDATE April 21, 2016 *
First and foremost, we wish Her Majesty a very happy 90th birthday.
Now on to the fashion! This morning, Spanish retailer m&h confirmed Princess Charlotte’s dress, cardigan, and bloomers are from m&h previous winter collection. Currently sold out, the dress retailed for £23.50, and m&h hopes to bring it back in next season’s collection.
Pepa & Co., another Spanish brand, has suggested that Charlotte’s cardigan could be theirs. However, after close inspection, we do not believe the buttons, color, and size of the neck opening are a perfect match to Charlotte’s cardigan. Although we do not have a photo of the exact cardigan m&h claims Charlotte wore, we have compared the stitching, neck hole, button closure, and wrists with available photos of other m&h cardigans and believe this one is likely theirs, as they assert. It also makes sense for Kate to have chosen a cardigan from the same company as the dress – in a color that would be a perfect match.

After more detailed inspection, we feel sure Charlotte’s accessories are the Dusty Pink Ribbed Tights by Amaia and Ivory Alex Pre-walker by Early Days – whether these are the same pair George wore or a brand new pair, we can’t be sure. Higher res images have also revealed that the princess holds a small toy horse. You can pick up a similar toy for your littles with this affordable set of horse action figures. Finally, Charlotte’s bangs are clipped back with a matching barrett – perhaps the Amaia Small Hair Bow in Dusty Pink.
When we spoke with M&H, they shared that Prince George does not wear their bermuda shorts, so our hunt for the red shorts continues! We did find a potential match for his collared shirt: the Little Arthur Piped Shirt from Trotters. We’ve seen George wear this brand many times in the past, and the navy piping on the peter pan collar and small gap in the front center between the two ends of the collar appear to match George’s shirt in the photograph.
This isn’t the first time two companies claim something the Cambridges wore (Remember George’s sailboat romper?). What are your thoughts on the cardigan debate? Comment below!
