It’s been a fairly quiet month for Royal Watchers interested in the Cambridge children, but this morning, Kensington Palace announced the official date of Princess Charlotte’s christening. The event will take place on Sunday, July 5 at the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate, about a 5-10 minute drive from Anmer Hall where the Cambridges have settled in for the summer.

Due to its close proximity, St. Mary Magdalene is certainly a convenient choice for the Cambridge family, but like the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace, where George was christened, it also holds a lot of significance for the young family. It’s a church that William and Kate are very familiar with, as it’s where the Royal Family congregates each year for the annual Christmas service after making the traditional walk from Sandringham House. However, there’s another reason that the 16th century church is the perfect choice for Charlotte’s christening; it’s where her late grandmother and namesake, Diana, Princess of Wales, was baptised. Princess Eugenie was christened there as well, setting a royal precedence.

The private service will be conducted by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who also christened Prince George, and a small number of the public and media will be allowed to gather outside. It’s likely that we will see photographs and videos at this point, with Kensington Palace releasing the official portraits after the event. Following Prince George’s christening, Prince Charles hosted a private tea at Clarence House, and we think it’s probable that a similar event will take place at Sandringham House after the service.

Princess Charlotte will undoubtedly wear the same christening gown Prince George wore for his baptism, a re-creation of the design Queen Victoria commissioned in 1841 for the royal family. The current garment was made by Angela Kelly (the personal assistant and senior dresser to the Queen) in 2004, after the original garment was deemed too fragile for continued use. Princess Charlotte will be the 5th royal baby to wear the replica, following in the footsteps of Prince George, Savannah and Isla Phillips, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn. We will keep you updated as more details of the event emerge, especially the naming of the godparents.

In other news, Prince George was recently seen with Kate in Holland Park in London. An onlooker reported that the two were having a ball, with Kate pretending to be a monster and chasing a squealing George about. While no pictures have emerged, reports say that the two were matching in waxed green coats, dark pants, and wellies. Based on the recent pictures we’ve seen of George in the park with Mum, we think it quite likely that he wore his Aigle Baby Flac Boots. We love how hands-on Kate is with her children!

We expect that a family photo will emerge of the Cambridges any day, similar to the ones Michael Middleton took after the birth of Prince George at Bucklebury Manor. There’s also the potential that George could show up on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the Trooping of the Colour on June 13, so things should be a bit busier around here over the next month. Here’s to hoping!
