Remember that adorable woolen bonnet Princess Charlotte was bundled up in leaving the hospital this weekend? We have some exciting new details! Commence the celebrations!
After hours spent gruelingly searching the internet for the maker of this hat, we finally know it origins. Irulea, a childrenswear boutique in San Sebastián, Spain, came forward as the maker of this adorable bonnet. This family owned company opened in 1932 by Mrs. Manuela Barandíaran, and it is now run by her daughter, Luísa Pagola Barandíaran, and granddaughters, Susana and Ayago Víllar Pagola. The boutique specializes in clothing and accessories for babies, women’s nightwear, and other textiles. Many of their items, including this bonnet, are handmade, and they offer customizations for their clients. Irulea is known for its quality in materials and construction. It is located in the original, beautiful store in Old Town, San Sabastián.
According to El Diario Vasco, Nanny Maria’s mother contacted Irulea to inquire commission several pieces, all in white or bone, in sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months. She travelled to the store and met with them during Irulea’s lunch break to finalize the details and paid in cash to avoid tracking. The sisters, according to the report, were surprised by the formality and discretion in this purchase, but did not think much of it until a customer contacted them this week, letting them know Princess Charlotte was wearing their hat. The customer had purchased the same hat for her grandchild from Irulea.
It's been said that Princess Charlotte wore the bonnet backwards, which may or may not have been an intentional choice by the Duke and Duchess (Remember when George wore his Petit Bateau Cotton Dungaree straps inside out in his birthday photos?). Irulea also states that the bone bonnet came in a set with booties and a sweater; you can just glimpse a peak of the sweater beneath Charlotte’s G.H. Hurt & Son shawl in this photo. We have requested stock photos of the pieces from Irulea as they appear to either be only available in store or are from an old season.

Two quick updates: Charlotte, George, Kate, and Wills have left London for Anmer Hall, where they will spend the summer. And if you haven’t seen it yet, check out Princess Charlotte’s official birth certificate. The “Occupation” of Wills and Kate is seriously epic.
